Every child deserves an equal opportunity to live a life filled

with hope, love and happiness.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Some parents may struggle with resource and time constraints, spending very little time with their children because they have to work, often at odd hours and sometimes with unpredictable changes in shifts. This may affect their children’s well-being and development, thereby placing them behind the starting line in life’s race.

child education
Children who do not go through early childhood education may face a 25% decrease in average adult earning potential.
The Lancet, 2016

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Early childhood education is important because it consists of not just education but also interaction. Having early interactions and experiences an help a child to have a strong foundation in life. However, due to different family circumstances, some children may require more care and support. Initiatives under Youth Corps Singapore such as KidsCount and KidsFun Holiday Programme provide opportunities to the children to further develop themselves by gaining skills and meaningful interaction.

“MUST KNOWS” FOR
INTERACTING WITH CHILDREN

GENERAL COMMUNICATION

GENERAL COMMUNICATION

1. USE “DOOR OPENER” STATEMENTS
This show that you are listening and are interested in what the child has to say. Some examples include “Wow.”, “Really?”, “Tell me more!”

2. USE MORE “DOS” THAN “DON’TS”
“Don’t” statements are more likely to reinforce what you do not want to happen. You should focus on more open and respectful suggestions. For instance, “Don't color on the carpet," becomes, “Please do your coloring on the table."

KEEPING CHILDREN ENGAGED

KEEPING CHILDREN ENGAGED

1. LOOK FOR WAYS TO INTEREST THE CHILD
For example “Let’s see how fast we can complete this!” Friendly competition with no real losers will help to engage the children quickly.

2. REMOVE DISTRACTIONS
in the environment when you are trying to engage him/her in an activity.

3. GIVE REQUESTS AN IMPORTANCE
To make your requests heeded, you first need to grab their attention before firmly telling them the rationale behind the request. An example would be “Adam, can you keep your toys? You are blocking the pathway and making it hard to move around.” instead of “Keep the toys. I am not going to ask again.”

APPROACH TOWARDS OVERLY PLAYFUL CHILDREN

APPROACH TOWARDS OVERLY PLAYFUL CHILDREN

1. EXPLAIN to the child firmly and calmly that there is a routine to follow.

2. PATIENCE goes a long way. Do not lose your temper and shout at the child.

3. SPEAK to the child at eye level and speak calmly. This is more likely to make him/her listen.

4. PRAISE the child for their good behaviour.

5. GUIDE the child, direct your comment at his/her behaviour and not him/her.
